History
The business was founded in 1963 by a group of forward thinking Bedfordshire farmers and growers who recognised that customers would require higher standards of crop marketing and presentation as retail groups expanded in the future.
It was also anticipated that a tunnel may link England to Europe and encourage greater import and export activity within the Horticultural sector.
A co-operative was formed, land purchased, and crop production and marketing co-ordinated in a small wooden hut on a field near Biggleswade, in Bedfordshire. The first packhouse was constructed on this site in 1966/7 and local staff employed with a long tradition of Horticultural harvesting and crop presentation skills as Vegetable and Potato crops had been grown in the area for many years. Crops had been originally delivered to London by horse drawn vehicles, then by rail, and later by lorries as improvements were made to the A1 highway.
The business prospered - supported by local growers as Members, and today remains as a Grower owned business. The site area expanded from 17 to 98 acres ( 7 to 40 hectares) to include adjacent farmland, and comprises three packhouses, modern crop grading and packing equipment, cold stores with distribution bays, and long term controlled atmosphere stores to support the crop commitments to key customers.
