Our truly sweet red onion which can be eaten like an apple, was developed by one of our growers Alastair Findlay.
Following a visit to the USA 30 years ago Alastair set about breeding a red onion that was consistently sweet.
Onion strength is measured according to its pyruvate levels. This onion has a consistently low pyruvate level allowing you to be confident to eat it raw.
In 2023 Alastair’s obsession with breeding the perfect Sweet Red Onion resulted in the launch of Calypso, initially launched both in the Middle East and America. Calypso is quite simply the tastiest Sweet Red Onion in the world, very low pungency but unlike some Sweet varieties still full of flavour. In 2024 Calypso was shortlisted for the prestigious Fruit Logistica Innovation award, where the best of worldwide fruit and vegetable product development is show cased.
Calypso encompasses Obsession, one man’s 30 year commitment to breed the very best Red Onion, whilst at the same time delivering outstand flavour and unbelievable crunch and appearance.
The onion is available in the UK from October through to April. As it is more akin to salads it is best kept refrigerated.
